# https://mindfulaboutlife.com ## Posts - [The secret to success in Q4](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/q4goals/): If you want to succeed in the final quarter of 2023, you will first have to define success by writing your Q4 goals Imagine it is December 31st and you are sitting down to review your goals for Q4. Imagine how you will feel that you not only hit all your goals but exceeded most of them. Imagine the pleasure of realizing you really do have this whole “entrepreneur thing” understood and, at least one quarter, you can stay on top of it and get ahead. Many entrepreneurs fail to achieve their business goals because they do not regularly review - [How To Stop Procrastinating and Be More Productive](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/procrastination/): Simple question – why do you procrastinate? And, no, not the “royal” you, the you you. Why do you procrastinate? And more importantly, how can you avoid procrastination? I think the answer is that you procrastinate because avoiding doing what you are supposed to do is more appealing than the doing it. But why? One hypothesis that I have heard many times before was put forward by Nic Voge in a TEDx talk. He thinks that we avoid things to protect our self-worth. If we don’t make a sale to “Jim Smith” because we called and tried and were turned - [If you are mindful, will it help your business?](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/mindful-helps-business/): If you have read just about anything that I have written, you know that I think that mindfulness is the best thing since sliced bread. But will it help your business? If you are a solopreneur, will it help you grow your business and connect with customers? If you are a manager, will it help your team work better? The short answer is, YES! Business leaders and professionals face constant pressure and challenges. They have to deal with multiple demands, deadlines, uncertainties, conflicts, and changes. They also have to cope with information overload, interruptions, and distractions. These factors can create - [Your Best Creativity Advice Ever](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/creativity/): One of the things that struck me the most is that creativity is not learned. Instead, it is unlearned. George Land did research in 1968 for NASA and then did it again with kids. He found that 98% of five-year-olds fell into the genius category for creativity. But only 12% of those same kids would be considered genius 10 years later when they were in high school. A survey of adults showed only 2% were geniuses. WOW. We are born geniuses and through schooling and peer pressure, it is knocked out of us. Louis Mobley was faced with this problem - [Is Self-Leadership for you?](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/self-leadership/): Well, that depends. I know I sound like such an academic when I say that 😊 but it is true. Some people are very happy following others, taking orders, keeping their head down and living life quietly. And there are others who cannot take orders and cannot allow themselves to be lead by others and want to figure things out on their own, even if that will include some mistakes. So, is self-leadership for you, you decide. Isn’t that a bit of a paradox? Even if you choose that self-leadership is not for you, you are showing some self-leadership. Now - [How often in life do you ask for feedback?](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/feedback/): It is very easy in life to get used to a situation and never check in with other people to see how you are doing. We do it at work and we do it in our relationships. But if we never get feedback we are never going to improve. Now, first of all, asking for feedback is going to involve feeling some negative emotions. Some people interpret mindfulness as trying to always be happy, which I disagree with. Being mindful is about feeling whatever is going on, positive or negative. Many of us will immediately shut down when we feel - [Don’t Fight Emotions](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/dont-fight-emotions/): Sometimes you just feel tired. Whether you are running a business or you have a salaried job. Whether you are a student trying to finish university or a teacher trying to finish the school year. Sometimes you just feel tired. You have three choices. You can try to fight the emotion and get yourself “pumped up”. This might work short term. And that short term might last two days or about 10 minutes, depending on how strong willed you are. But for most people, this doesn’t last very long and it is not a long-term solution. Your second choice is - [How to curb the urge to control](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/control/): I am going to be very blunt, are you a “control freak”? I spoke with two people last week, one who admitted to being a control freak and the other one I sort of said was a control freak. As Dr. Phil would say, “How’s that going for you?” Both know that being a control freak is not good for them or the people around them. And yet, they persist. Always having to be in control can also lead to overwhelm. Either having to do everything yourself or check everything after someone else has done it is simply too much - [What you can learn from a half marathon](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/half-marathon/): I ran a half-marathon last weekend and while spending over two hours with my thoughts and my music I realized that there are definitely lessons to be learned for your business from the experience.  Firstly, you have to know who you are competing against. Correct answer – only you. If, as a coach, I was trying to compete with Jack Canfield or Les Brown, I would lose. I am not in their league. I am not trying to make more money than them or improve more lives than them. I am trying to help more people than I did last - [You can overcome overwhelm with just one simple step](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/implementation/): If you have ever experienced overwhelm (and let’s be serious, who has NEVER experienced overwhelm?) you know the advice, just take the first step. Well, duh! If I was able to take the first step I would not be stuck in overwhelm! A lot of research has been done in getting students to complete tasks and one way that was developed is called implementation intentions. Very simply, the researchers asked the students to complete a task – write an essay over vacation. Some students were asked when and where they would complete the task and these students did much better - [Teachers’ well-being is not bouncing back](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/teachers-well-being-is-not-bouncing-back/): We have a problem with our teachers. They are not doing so well. Our principals are also suffering. And, (should I say as always?), teachers and principals of color are having a harder time. Now there are always people who say that teachers are a bunch of crybabies. Firstly, let them stand in front of 30 students for just one hour! But aside from that, The Rand corporation surveyed 2,300 teachers and 1,500 principals and then compared their answers to a representative sample of American workers. Because we know that everyone is having a hard time since the beginning of - [Get your butterflies flying in formation](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/butterflies/): I was listening to the Ten Percent Happier podcast where Dan Harris was interviewing Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett. Dr. Feldman Barrett is a neuroscientist who studies emotions and she told the greatest story that we can all learn from. She relayed that her daughter was 12 years old and trying out for her black belt in karate. This small 12-year-old girl was going to be sparring with teenage boys much bigger than her. You could easily imagine that this young lady was quite nervous. Her sensei did not say to her, “Don’t be nervous” or “You got this, don’t worry”. - [The Holidays are Coming – Don’t Stress](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/the-holidays-are-coming-dont-stress/): We all know the holidays are coming. They come at the end of November every year and stick around until the beginning of January. And just as regularly as the holidays coming, many people regularly experience stress around the holidays. If you already started thinking about your guest list for Thanksgiving or your gift list for the holidays knowing they are around the corner, you should also start thinking about dealing with the stress that, inevitably, will come as well. In an excellent review, David Creswell and Emily Lindsay wrote that mindfulness helps best in people who are stressed. If - [My time, your time, or our time?](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/my-time-your-time-or-our-time/): Do you feel you have enough time? We all know that every single person on the planet gets the same 24 hours each day, the same 168 hours each week. Why does it seem that some people have more time than others? There is a notion in positive psychology of “time affluence”. To measure this, Dr. Yu Niiya of Hosei University in Japan asked people if they felt that time was “zero-sum” or “nonzero-sum”. Think about that for a moment. When you spend time with someone, do you feel they are taking away your time? Or do you feel enriched - [Fear of Failure – It is real and you can overcome it!](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/failure/): Fear of Failure is a real thing. I know that and you know that. Not only can we feel it in our gut, scientists can even measure it! 😊 An article was just published last month that presents research with entrepreneurs about measuring it and overcoming it. While the research was done with entrepreneurs, I think it is just as valid for all professionals who have to decide on a path forward in business or career decision. I have a hunch that it is also very similar to test anxiety, but that is more of a stretch. When an entrepreneur - [One cure for aggression - mindfulness](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/aggression/): We all know that aggression exists and we all know that it is healthier to control your aggression rather than have your aggression control you. But how can we do that? What clues has research given us for controlling our anger and aggression? (By the way, if you think this doesn’t apply to you, read through until the end!) In a word – mindfulness. Many studies have shown a correlation between more mindfulness and less aggression. At one extreme, Dr. Ryan Shorey and his colleagues found that men who needed help with substance abuse were less aggressive if they were - [Rivalry – Good or Bad? Or Both?](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/rivalry-good-or-bad-or-both/): Is rivalry a good thing or a bad thing? It is a simple question but what would you guess is the answer? Do you think I am going to write that a healthy rivalry improves performance? Or that competition blinds us to our true goals or blinds us to people that we hurt along the way?  Or perhaps I will write that it depends? Firstly, did you notice the little switch I made there from rivalry to competition? In competition there is usually a zero-sum game. If I win, you lose. How is rivalry different? One example is the rivalry - [What is your time perspective?](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/what-is-your-time-perspective/): I want to talk about our relationship with time. I am not talking about if time flies or if time moves as slow as molasses. And we have all had a weird experience with time for the last while with many of our routines and times completely upside down. Those are all important points, but it is not what I want to talk about. I want to talk about a concept called “time perspective”. But how do you perceive time? Are you happy with how you relate to time? Does your perspective of time serve you well? Dr. Philip Zimbardo - [Writing away your stress](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/writing-away-stress/): We all have stress in life. The Roman philosopher Seneca wrote, “If you really want to escape the things that harass you, what you’re needing is not to be in a different place but to be a different person.” So how do we become the “different person” that is not stressed and harassed? There are many techniques one of which is called “expressive writing” in which you simply write about a stressful or traumatic experience for 20 minutes on three to five days. Monica Kenneson and 5 of her colleagues did a study with first year undergraduates. Do you remember - [Mindfulness Leads to Job Satisfaction](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/jobsatisfaction/): The Greek Stoic philosopher Epictetus said something to the effect of, “It is not things that trouble us, but our interpretations of them”. Stuff happens at work all the time and sometimes it is objectively bad stuff that happens. We all know that some people stay calm and keep moving forward and others run down the hall like their hair is on fire. There is an idea in studies about emotions at work called “surface emotions vs deep emotions”. The basic difference is if you are boiling inside and want to kill someone but you put a smile on your - [Is it time to reinvent yourself?](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/is-it-time-to-reinvent-yourself/): We are living through unprecedented times. A lot of what was true in December 2019 may not be true anymore. Is it time for you to adapt to this new reality? Is it time for you to reinvent yourself? Mark Johnson, Clayton Christensen and Henning Kagermann wrote an article in the Harvard Business Review back in 2008 that may be spot on for the times we are living in. I am sure I don’t need to tell you that you need to have a customer value proposition. But did the customer’s values change in the last few months? Has your - [What CoronaVirus can teach us about Behavior Change](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/coronavirusbehaviorchange/): Do you remember back in 2009 when the H1N1 flu was going around and then President Obama told all Americans that we should sneeze into our sleeve instead of our hands? I remember thinking then that it was so simple and yet so important. And, all of a sudden, I had a behavior change. Now, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, I am being asked to wash my hands for 20 seconds. I am neither a germophobe nor am I a slob. I wash my hands when appropriate but until now I was not meticulous about washing for 20 seconds. It - [Job Crafting](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/job-crafting/): Are you one of the 54% of American workers who are satisfied with your job or one of the 46% who are not? What could increase your happiness at work? If you are unsatisfied at work you basically have two choices. You can try to find a new job that will satisfy you and maybe it will or maybe it won’t. You can never be sure. The other option is to change the job you have to make satisfying to you. That is called Job Crafting – when you change or redefine your job to incorporate your strengths and passions. - [Break Free of Anxiety](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/break-free-of-anxiety/): Do you feel anxious at work sometimes? We all do! A big presentation, an interview for a promotion, a meeting with a new customer. All of these can give us anxiety. It goes without saying, though I will say it anyway, if you feel you might be experiencing anxiety disorder or if your anxiety gets in the way of your day-to-day activities, please consult a medical professional or a mental-health professional. But most of us have good mental health and only experience occasional anxiety. What is the best way to deal with that? Firstly, there is not ONE best way, - [Mindful Multitasking](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/mindful-multitasking/): Do you have to multitask to finish your to-do list every day? Are you always juggling family chores at work and work assignments at home? Do you feel worn out most of the time? And are you SUPER jealous of the people who can pull it off without breaking a sweat? Jared Weintraub and some of his colleagues did some research that asked a simple question – what makes it so easy for some people to multitask and feel good about it while others are ready to pull the hair out of their head? Once they had their question, they - [Do you want to be a better parent?](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/do-you-want-to-be-a-better-parent/): Do you want to be a better parent? Be mindful! Who doesn’t want to be a better parent? I have been a parent for a long time now and I still say or do the wrong thing sometimes. But you can improve! Dr. Carolina Corthorn did a study of 40 mothers who worked for a university and had kids in the university’s daycare. Most of the moms had higher education but their income was pretty average with a bunch earning significantly less than the average and bunch significantly more. All the moms filled out a lot of questionnaires before the - [Meditators Have Young Brains](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/young-brain/): It may not surprise you that as we get older, our brains change. Certainly it changes a lot when we are babies and while it slows down a bit, the brain is not fully formed until about age 25. (This is why teenagers often make some pretty stupid choices – their brains are not really formed yet. A good reason to, perhaps, put off driving an extra few years and certainly a good reason to have 21 as the legal age for drinking.) Even after age 25 there are still a lot of changes going on in the brain and ## Pages - [Mindful Eating Meditation - Meditation 30](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/mem-30/): Here is meditation 30. I have been a teacher for over 35 years. At some point I realized that I was doing a pretty good job at giving over information but what my students needed help with was confidence and staying on track. So I learned coaching to help them with that. Now you can get the benefit of all those years that I was helping my students learn, grow and stay on track. If you would like to contact me, you can shoot me an email at shaya@MindfulAboutLife.com or call me at 1-800-544-0559.  - [Privacy Policy](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/privacy-policy/): Privacy Policy Who we are Our website address is: https://mindfulaboutlife.com. How often do you do something because the boss is “looking over your shoulder” and you have to admit to yourself that even though you should, you probably would not do it if you were not forced? How much do you want to improve but you never get around to it? Would you benefit from self-leadership coaching? I bet your first question is, “What the heck is self-leadership coaching?” Have - [Welcome](https://mindfulaboutlife.com/): You might think of mindfulness as meditation or yoga, but mindfulness is about what happens in your head all day long.
